Many of us have thought that if God would just tell us what to do, we would do it. But Scripture reveals a striking pattern: God gives us enough clarity to obey, but not enough clarity to make faith unnecessary. He gives direction without the full plan because He wants us to trust Him, not just follow a map. If you are in a difficult season and wondering where God is, He has not forgotten you. When God Feels Silent: What Elijah's Story Teaches Us About Faith After the Mountaintop It is easy to trust God when the fire falls from heaven. But what about the days after, when nothing seems to change and you feel completely alone? The story of Elijah in 1 Kings 18 and 19 speaks directly to that experience, and it has something important to say to every believer who has ever wondered if God is still working.Watch Who Was Elijah and Why Did His Story Matter? To understand what Elijah went through, it helps to know the world he was living in. After King Solomon's death, the kingdom of Israel split in two. The northern kingdom of Israel had a long line of wicked kings, and the worst of them all was Ahab. Scripture says Ahab "did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before Him." He married Jezebel, who brought in pagan worship, persecuted God's people, and had the prophets of God killed. It was a dark time. From the outside, it could feel like Israel was too far gone. So God sent a prophet named Elijah, whose name means "my God is Yahweh," to confront Ahab and Jezebel directly. The Showdown on Mount Carmel: When God Answered With Fire Elijah challenged Ahab to a contest on Mount Carmel. It was 450 prophets of Baal against one prophet of God. Two bulls, two altars, no fire. Whoever's God answered by sending fire would be declared the true God. The prophets of Baal danced, shouted, and even cut themselves trying to get a response. Nothing happened. Elijah even taunted them, suggesting maybe Baal was hard of hearing or perhaps on vacation. Scripture simply says, "there was no voice, no one answered, no one paid attention." Then it was Elijah's turn. He rebuilt a broken altar, placed the sacrifice on it, and had water poured over everything until it filled the trench around it. He put himself at every disadvantage because he knew it did not matter to God whether the sacrifice was wet or dry. He prayed: "O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and that I have done all these things at your word." - 1 Kings 18:36 English Standard Version (ESV) Fire fell from heaven. It consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the rocks, the water, and even the dust. The people of Israel fell on their faces and declared, "The Lord, He is God." Why Do Spiritual Lows So Often Follow Spiritual Highs? You might expect that after a moment like that, everything would change. But that is not what happened. Ahab told Jezebel everything, and she sent Elijah a message threatening to kill him by the next day. And Elijah ran. This is one of the most honest and relatable moments in all of Scripture. The same man who stood alone against 450 false prophets was now fleeing for his life because of one woman's threat. Elijah had expected revival. He thought surely even Jezebel would turn to the Lord after seeing what God had done. But she didn't. And Elijah failed to realize what we all have to reckon with: some people will not follow God despite the evidence. Spiritual trials so often follow spiritual victories. The emotional momentum of a mountaintop experience always runs out. Life returns to normal. Everyday problems come back. And when the feelings fade, the enemy is ready to move in. What Does Burnout Look Like for a Faithful Believer? Elijah ran to the wilderness, isolated himself, and asked God to take His life. "It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers." - 1 Kings 19:4 English Standard Version (ESV) He was physically, emotionally, and spiritually spent. He felt alone. He felt like a failure. He felt like nothing he had done had made any difference. This is what burnout looks like for a faithful person. It is not always dramatic. Sometimes it is just exhaustion and the quiet belief that nothing you do matters. Elijah did not doubt God's power. He doubted his own worth and wondered if Israel was simply beyond saving. How Does God Respond to Exhaustion and Depression? Here is where the grace of God becomes so beautiful. God did not respond in anger or frustration. He did not lecture Elijah or rebuke him for running. He met him exactly where he was. An angel touched Elijah and said, "Arise and eat." - 1 Kings 19:5 English Standard Version (ESV) There was bread and water waiting for him. Elijah ate, lay back down, and God let Him rest. Then the angel came a second time with the same provision and added: "Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you." - 1 Kings 19:7 English Standard Version (ESV) Before God could address Elijah's spiritual needs, He addressed His physical ones. God values our physical health. He is a God who knows that sometimes the most spiritual thing a person can do is sleep and eat a meal. He did not give Elijah all the answers at once. He gave him what he needed for that moment. What Is the Significance of Elijah's Journey to Mount Sinai? Sustained by that food and water, Elijah traveled for 40 days and nights to Mount Horeb, also known as Mount Sinai. This was not an accident. God was retracing Israel's own history to remind Elijah of who He is. Israel had wandered 40 years in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. God had provided manna and water. He had given them the covenant at Mount Sinai. Now Elijah, fleeing from the promised land, wandered 40 days in the wilderness on bread and water and arrived at the very place where it all began. God was teaching Elijah even when Elijah did not know He was being taught. God's ways are higher than ours, and His timing does not always make sense in the moment. What Does It Mean That God Was Found in the Still Small Voice? At Mount Sinai, God asked Elijah a simple question: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" - 1 Kings 19:9 English Standard Version (ESV) Elijah poured out his heart. He felt alone. He felt like he was the only one left who was faithful. He felt like his obedience had produced nothing. Then God told Him to go stand on the mountain. A great wind came and tore the rocks apart. Then an earthquake. Then fire. But God was not in any of them. After the fire came a low whisper, what the Hebrew describes as a voice of silence or stillness. And that is where Elijah found the presence of God. This is a profound lesson. God can work in the spectacular, but His presence is often found in the stillness. Just because we cannot sense God does not mean He is absent. The silence of Baal on Mount Carmel confirmed he was not there. The silence of God at Sinai confirmed He was. Faith is trusting that God is working even when we cannot sense it. Does God Work Even When We Cannot See It? After Elijah answered God's question the same way He had before, God did not give Him a long theological explanation. He gave him something to do and something to know. He told Elijah to go anoint Hazael as king over Syria, Jehu as king over Israel, and Elisha as prophet in his place. Elijah was not alone, and the work was not finished. God was raising up the next generation of leaders. And then God revealed something Elijah did not know: "Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed Him." - 1 Kings 19:18 English Standard Version (ESV) Seven thousand people. Quietly faithful. Unknown to Elijah. God had been working in the silence the entire time. Consider the 400 years between the Old and New Testaments when the prophets were silent. God was not on vacation. During that time, Rome built roads connecting the entire known world. A common language spread across empires. When the gospel finally went out from Jerusalem, it had a highway to travel and a language to travel in. God had been preparing the way for centuries through what looked like an oppressive regime. No one living in that moment could have seen it. God does not need spectacular demonstrations to accomplish His will. He far more often works through the unremarkable, the quiet conversations, the faithful prayers, the seeds planted without knowing if they will ever grow. What Should We Do When We Feel Like Our Faithfulness Is Not Making a Difference? Elijah's story ends not with a rebuke but with a renewed purpose. God shifted His focus from inward to outward. He stopped asking Elijah to carry Israel on his shoulders and reminded him that his job was simply to be faithful to the next step. Elijah was not the only link between God and His people. He never was. His role was to do what God told Him to do. Others had their roles too, even if Elijah could not see them. The same is true for us. Maybe you have prayed for someone for years and nothing seems to have changed. Maybe you stepped out in obedience and the result was not what you expected. Maybe you feel like you are the only one left who cares. God is still working. The work never stops. In His grace, He simply invites us to be part of it.Subscribe To These Posts Life Application This week, identify one area of your life where you have been waiting for a dramatic sign from God before taking your next step of obedience. Choose to trust that He is already working in the silence of that situation, and take the next step anyway, even if you cannot see where it leads. Ask yourself these questions as you reflect: Am I waiting for God to show up in a big, dramatic way before I trust Him, and what would it look like to trust Him in the stillness instead? Have I isolated myself from other believers during a hard season, and who might God be placing in my life to encourage me right now? Is there a role God is calling me to play in His work that I have been avoiding because the results do not look the way I expected? Am I defining success by my own expectations, or am I willing to be faithful to the next step and leave the outcome in God's hands? God is too good to stop working. Your circumstances do not determine His activity. He was working before you could see it, and He will keep working long after. Your job is simply to say yes to the next step. What would happen if we committed to spending 20 minutes in the presence of God daily? How different would our lives look? What would our homes look like a year from now? Our community? 567 & Student Ministry Update | October

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Costume Kickball Campout, October 30-31 The Costume Kickball Campout is coming October 30-31! This is one of our favorite events of the fall, and we are excited to bring it back again this year. Our 5th through 7th graders will camp overnight in tents and our 567 leaders will serve as chaperones. They will play Costume Kickball, eat plenty of food, play games, and spend a night building friendships together. Students should start thinking about their costumes now! Use the button below to go ahead and register for the weekend!Costume Kickball Campout Registration This month, we're beginning a new teaching series called More Than a Song! Over the next several weeks, we'll explore what Scripture teaches about worship and why it involves so much more than the songs we sing on Wednesday nights or Sunday mornings. Worship is our response to who God is and what He has done, and it should influence every part of our lives. We want students to develop a biblical understanding of worship that leads them to honor God not just through music, but through their attitudes, decisions, relationships, and everyday obedience. Costume Party | October 28, 2026 At the end of the month, we're hosting our annual Costume Party! This is a fun opportunity for our students to serve the younger children in our church! During our normal Wednesday night programming, we will create an indoor Trunk-or-Treat experience for our preschool and elementary students in the youth room, with decorated tables, costumes, candy, and plenty of fun. We need students to sign up to decorate a table or "trunk"! Students who sign up will be responsible for decorating their space and bringing 1–2 large bags of candy or inexpensive toys to hand out to the kids. We are also accepting candy donations from families who would like to contribute, even if their student isn't decorating a table. And of course, we're encouraging all of our students to dress up for the Costume Party! We love this event because it gives our teenagers an opportunity to take ownership, be creative, and serve the next generation of our church family. It's going to be a great night! Hey Connect Families! I hope everyone had a great September. I can't be the only one pumped for cooler temperatures and fall time? Below you will find the upcoming events and information for Connect Kids. If you ever have any questions, feel free to reach out to me anytime. We want you to stay informed of all the incredible things going on in our kids' ministry. Most importantly, we want your families to be focused on being followers of Jesus. Find time to talk about God's Word in your daily life and what you can do to be a better disciple for Him! Have a blessed October! Pastor Bert Upcoming Events October 28-Kids Costume Night Join us for a field trip to Connect Students! We will begin at our normal time and drop off. Soon after preschool and elementary students will head to our student room for games and prizes! Also, be sure to wear a non scary costume! October Memory Verse The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
- 2 Corinthians 13:14 Elementary Families We will be changing the way our Connect Kids Store works to help make the process quicker and easier for everyone! Beginning this week, we will start phasing out Kid Cash. If your child has been saving Kid Cash, encourage them to spend it while they can! A few important dates: We will not hand out Kid Cash beginning this week. Kids can continue spending the Kid Cash they already have. Our new "Kid Card" system begins Sunday, October 18! How will Kid Cards work? Instead of earning Kid Cash, kids will receive punches on their own punch card. Once a child earns 10 punches, they can turn in their completed card and choose a prize! Even better—the punch card is designed to double as a Bible bookmark, so kids can keep it right in their Bible and bring it back each week. We’re excited about this new system and hope it will make earning rewards simpler, quicker, and just as fun! Check out what the new punch cards will look like below!

Women's Ministry Update
A Souper Evening We had a great time at our Women's Souper Social earlier this month! It was so good to see ladies of all ages spending time together, sharing a meal, and getting to know one another better. We believe community is an important part of growing in our relationship with Jesus. Church is so much more than gathering together on Sunday mornings. It's about building relationships, encouraging one another, and walking through life together. We're thankful for opportunities like this and for everyone who helped make the evening happen!What's Happening this Month at Connect Church!
