'Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.' - Matthew 5:4
Once we recognize our spiritual poverty, something beautiful and painful happens: we begin to mourn. Not the world's shallow regret over getting caught, but deep, godly sorrow over how our sin grieves the heart of God. This mourning flows naturally from spiritual emptiness. When we truly see ourselves as God sees us—beloved but broken, treasured but in desperate need of rescue—our hearts break over the ways we've fallen short. We grieve not just the consequences of sin, but sin itself and how it separates us from the One who loves us most. Yet this mourning isn't meant to leave us in despair. Jesus promises comfort to those who mourn. God draws near to the brokenhearted, and His presence brings healing that goes deeper than any earthly consolation. This divine comfort doesn't minimize our grief but transforms it into something redemptive. The progression continues: spiritual poverty leads to mourning, which opens our hearts to receive God's comfort. Each step prepares us for the next stage of kingdom living, building a foundation of humility and dependence on God's grace.
